The following article appears in the November '07 issue of Beckett Baseball, now available at hobby shops, retailers or www.beckett.com
This month, Beckett Baseball did a feature highlighting the 12 Greatest Cards of the 21st Century. Beckett anointed the 2005 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia Tools of the Trade Swatch Single Jumbo Babe Ruth as the greatest baseball card produced in the industry during the past seven years.
The article went onto say, "Like the Babe himself, this was huge...both in terms of hobby headlines and size of the swatch itself...The Jersey pieces, were cut from a 1925-era beauty that DP had paid $250,000 for, featured a perfect symmetry of the pinstripes on the majority of these jumbo swatch cards - each serial-numbered to 95 - adding to the attraction as simply one of the greatest cards ever produced, and is arguable the greatest."
In a move that was both cheered and jeered by the sporting and collecting public, Donruss Playoff purchased the 1925-era game-worn Babe Ruth jersey from auction in 2003. Known as just one of three Ruth pinstriped home jerseys to exist, it was cut at a special event held in Times Square, attended by Ruth's daughter (Julia Ruth-Stevens) and Hall of Famer Gary Carter. Sopranos stars Drea De Matteo and Steve R. Schirripa were also in attendance.
"He would have been delighted with what Donruss is doing with the trading cards," Ruth-Stevens says. "Collectors will be pleased to be able to share in this."
Also on the list, the 2005 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia Update Tools of the Trade Swatch Single Jumbo Prime Black Jim Thorpe. The card features the last name from the former New York jersey.
