From the time the first faint frames of D.W. Griffith's "The Birth of a Nation" flickered on movie house walls nearly a century ago, America has embraced its cinema and entertainment stars with unbridled and unflinching passion.
Our nation's stars during the Golden Era of the Silver Screen were so elegant...so regal...and so American.
Fast forward to today and our stars are still revered by the masses, but America's adoration extends far beyond the big screen and reaches into television, music, politics and sports.
With the release of Americana, Donruss seamlessly taps into the world of Hollywood and pop culture to create a one-of-a-kind release that succinctly captures the flavor of our rich and storied show biz history. With an unrivaled entertainment trading card portfolio built over 40 years, only Donruss is uniquely qualified to present this stunning lineup of celebrity icons.
The first sneak preview of Americana debuted at the 2007 National Convention in Cleveland, the announcement coming when former WWE diva, "Dancing with the Stars" participant and "What About Brian" actress Stacy Keibler met fans and signed autographs at the Donruss booth. Stacy stayed two hours, signing a special Donruss Americana promo card while interacting with fans...and plenty of gawkers.
She's as Americana as they come these days.
"I'm very flattered and genuinely happy that I was asked to be a part of this set," says Keibler, whose next film, "The Comebacks," is slated for a Fall 2007 release. "I feel honored to be in a category with these other celebrities and people from history that are part of this set."
Stacy is one of 100 personalities comprising the base set of Donruss Americana, with each signing autographs for the set. Those heavy-hitter names hail from Hollywood, the music industry, sports and classic television.
Hollywood is a big part of Donruss Americana, and collectors will have the opportunity to chase the autographs of stars from such classic films as Star Wars, Star Trek The Motion Picture, Saturday Night Fever, Grease and many others. Likewise, stars from the Golden Era of Hollywood when movie premieres were a thing of beauty and elegance reined.
Some 40 stars comprise the Hollywood Legends segment of Donruss Americana, each captured on their own card. And a bonus for collectors: Each star will be represented in the Hollywood Legends Materials insert set, an historic offering consisting of swatches of dresses, suit jackets, shoes, hats and other pieces of materials once belonging to the greatest names in Hollywood.
A select few legends have also added their significant signatures to the set, adding another layer of Golden Era aura to the release.
Among the most visually stunning elements in Donruss Americana are the Hollywood Legends Directors Cut cards, which include an autograph from the featured star along with a personally-written special message from the signer.
The Co-Stars segment offers another element of Hollywood and the television industry as it links famous pairs from the big and small screen. Stars such as William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy and Larry Hagman and Barbara Eden are paired in this incredible insert set. Donruss has secured personally worn materials from the famous duos and will include a swatch from each in the Co-Stars Materials insert set.
Of course, Americana encompasses the world of sports, too, and Donruss is certainly in tune with that part of popular culture. Hall of Famers such as Willie Mays as well as current sports headliners like Jim Courier have signed autographs as part of the Sports Legends segment of Donruss Americana.
Popular culture covers a lot of genres in the American entertainment, athletic and political forums. Donruss has them all covered, and more.
Donruss Americana is like nothing else ever released, both in scope and direction. For those who have seen the sneak previews, it's been unanimous: Thumbs-up.
Donruss will be releasing more names and images over the coming months, so stay tuned to www.donruss.com. Donruss Studio Americana will release in November.
